Have you developed cancer after frequent exposure to Roundup® weed killer?

Thousands of cancer victims across the country are filing lawsuits against Monsanto, the manufacturer of the Roundup® weed killer. Contigo Centro Legal is investigating cases of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma caused by exposure to Roundup®, through both on-the-job and domestic use.

Many victims, including farm workers, landscapers and nursery workers have filed lawsuits after being exposed to Roundup® and contracting Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. If you or someone you know developed cancer after frequent exposure to Roundup® weed killer, you may be entitled compensation to cover your medical bills and other losses related to the cancer diagnosis.

What is Roundup® weed killer?

Roundup® is one of the most widely used weed killers (or herbicides) throughout the United States by farm workers, landscapers, nursery workers, golf course greens-keepers and homeowners. Roundup® works by blocking certain proteins that plants need to grow. Its active ingredient is glyphosate, a chemical that has been linked to serious side effects, including Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Roundup is manufactured by the Monsanto Company, a maker of agricultural chemicals. The German chemical company Bayer bought Monsanto in 2018.

How dangerous is Roundup® weed killer?

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a division of the World Health Organization, assessed the cancer risk of five pesticides and herbicides used in industrial farming.  The World Health Organization labeled glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup®, as a probable carcinogen, meaning the chemical probably causes cancer in humans. The IARC report said glyphosate caused cancer in laboratory tests involving animals and that there was some evidence the chemical caused genetic damage in human cells, causing mutations that can develop into cancer.

In December 2017, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a draft risk assessment of glyphosate and concluded that it is not likely to cause cancer in humans. But, the EPA scientific advisory panel was not unified in its opinion, and glyphosate remains a focus of research in this area.

Several researchers who served on the EPA scientific advisory panel that reviewed the safety of glyphosate recently issued a study suggesting that people who are exposed to large amounts of the chemical are at heightened risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. The researchers said their review of data from multiple previous studies found “a compelling link” between exposure to weed killers containing glyphosate and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. A group of independent scientists has urged the EPA to ban Roundup® in the United States.

Who is at risk of developing cancer from Roundup® use?

Those most at risk of developing cancer associated with heavy exposure to Roundup® and glysophate-containing weed killers include:

  • Farm workers.

  • Garden center and nursery workers

  • Horticulturists.

  • Groundskeepers.

  • Landscapers.

  • Avid gardeners.

What are the symptoms of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma?

The symptoms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma include:

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin.

  • Pain in the abdomen.

  • Bowel obstruction.

  • Chest pain and pressure.

  • A feeling of fullness caused by an enlarged spleen.

  • Fatigue.

  • Fever.

  • Unexplained weight loss.

Many of the symptoms listed above may be associated with multiple health conditions besides cancer; for example, lymph nodes can swell in response to an infection or other causes.

Have juries awarded compensation to cancer victims in Roundup® lawsuits?

Thousands of people diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma have filed lawsuits against Monsanto. These lawsuits allege that the manufacturer has known that glyphosate was hazardous to humans but failed to warn adequately of the health risks.

Juries in at least three recent trials have reviewed the evidence and found Monsanto liable for knowing Roundup® was hazardous and failing to adequately warn consumers about the health risks.

  • In May 2019, a California jury ordered Monsanto to pay $2 billion to a couple who regularly used Roundup® on their property and were both diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

  • A federal jury in March 2019 decided that Monsanto should pay more than an $80 million in damages to a California man who used Roundup® to control weeds on his property for 26 years and was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2015.

  • And, in 2018, another California jury found that Monsanto failed to warn a school groundskeeper of the risk posed by Roundup®, resulting in a $289 million verdict later reduced to $80 million.
